The statement of purpose is the most significant part of a PhD application. Although the degree of its importance vary according to the research field, it is still important to pen-down a statement of purpose that would assist you to stand apart. A statement of purpose should declare the scope, purpose, and direction of your research. It informs the target reader about the focus of the study and what he/she needs to expect in the paper. Today, almost all the research domains demand a statement of purpose. Some of the advantages of writing a statement of purpose are:
- It will keep you involved in the research
- It prevents you from taking decision in haste while including the data in the research paper
- It saves time and effort spent on crafting final research document
Like any other concepts in an academic paper, crafting a statement of purpose is the most strenuous task. Like any other sections in an academic paper, a statement of purpose has a structured & logical format and includes several key components (which you cannot afford to miss). These consists of:
- Finalise on the theme of your SOP
The statement of purpose should have a theme. That is, it should focus on a specific theme. Although you would want to tell about every concept in your research, it is advisable not to do so and instead incorporate only the crucial information. Finalising the theme will help you to decide how your statement of purpose(SOP) must progress.
- Shear the list
After finalising the theme, go back to the list of information and eliminate the irrelevant data. Although it is important to know what needs to be included in the statement of purpose, it is significant to know what shouldn’t be included.
- Customise the content
This is the most important characteristic you need to consider while crafting the statement of purpose. Prepare a tailor-made SOP that focuses on your research program and the University you wish to enroll. Your statement of purpose must explain the committee the crucial reason behind selecting that particular University by referencing their resources, professors, or approaches.
- Summarise your previous graduate degree career
Include the project completed, what role you played in performing & completing the project, and it’s outcome. Also, if you have any experience in designing, coding, etc. make sure you include them.
- Explain academic interests
Describe your area of interest and what exactly you would want to research in the chosen area. Convince the faculty that you have knowledge about the chosen topic and have potential to conduct the research.
Tip:
- End all the sections in a positive manner.
- Do not use passive voice, instead utilise active voice
- Demonstrate each concept with an example
- Ensure everything is linked with continuity and focus
